Barbra 2012

proudly present

OUR NAME IS BARBRA 2012 - To Benefit "Songs For Isabella"

WE SING BARBRA SONGS TO CELEBRATE BARBRA'S BIRTHDAY TO BENEFIT THE "SONGS FOR ISABELLA" FUND !

On April 24, 1998, a small group of friends got together in a living room and took turns performing songs from "The Gospel According To Barbra" for each other's amusement. Since it was a particularly talented and creative group, each number was hilarious and thrilling - to this day, it was one of the most satisfying nights I've ever had.

Since then, it has become a yearly obsession to keep that ball rolling...recently we have evolved out of the living room and into a nightclub venue...and this year, will be the first time that we are having "The Barbra Birthday Party" as a fundraiser for the grass roots fundraising campaign, very near and dear to my heart, "Songs For Isabella" (See below)

So please join us on Monday, April 23 at Catalina Jazz Club (The day before Barbra's actual birthday)

There will be both faithful renditions and bent reinventions of Streisand classics like "Love With All The Trimmings", "Lazy Afternoon", "Speak Low", "Any Place I Hang My Hat Is Home", "The Summer Knows", "Autumn Leaves", "Here's To Life", "Don't Rain On My Parade", "When In Rome" and more!!

PLEASE VISIT OUR NEW COMMUNITY PAGE FOR MORE PROMOTIONAL INFORMATION AND BACKGROUND~

In August, 2009, after her parents found her breathing but unresponsive 2-year old Isabella Vahanian was rushed to the hospital, stabilized and diagnosed with AML leukemia. While still in intensive care, she immediately began an intensive 6 round, in-hospital chemotherapy treatment plan. Her parents, Gregory and Wendy, lived with Isabella at the hospital on shifts 24/7 for almost 8 months while still caring for Gabriela, their then 8-year old, at home. Isabella's care became their full-time work.
Now that she's completed her in-hospital treatment, her bone marrow and blood tests show she's in remission.

To assist the Vahanian Family in meeting the financial challenges associated with the long term hospitalization of their daughter, they've partnered with The Talbert Family Foundation. This 501c3 organization provides a tax-deductible way to assist them in meeting their current cash flow needs as they bridge forward and reintegrate into a normal flow of life.

JUDY BUTTERFIELD makes her Catalina Jazz Club debut with her all new critically acclaimed show, "UNDER THE MANHATTAN MOON." Miss Butterfield, a recipient of the Mabel Mercer Foundation's prestigious Julie Wilson Award, is one of Cabaret's fastest rising stars. At a mere twenty-one years old, Miss Butterfield has performed concerts across the country, released two CDs, and has appeared in New York at the Rose Theater in Lincoln Center, Feinstein's at the Leows Regency and the legendary Oak Room at the Algonquin Hotel. Cabaret Scenes declares "…a voice that's magnificent and pure, along with superb phrasing and an utterly charming manner" while Time Out New York adds "like Maude Maggart before her, the precocious singer has benefited from the mentorship of cabaret grande dame Andrea Marcovicci, whose influence is evident in her remarkable poise and informative patter." Ms. Butterfield's new show "UNDER THE MANHATTAN MOON" combines her youthful take on the Great American Songbook with a narrative exploring her experiences as a young woman newly living in modern day Manhattan in contrast to the love story of her grandparents that took place on the same streets two generations ago. www.JUDYBUTTERFIELD.com

JOANNE TATHAM is a favorite of audiences from her native New York to her adopted home in Los Angeles. Following the release of her acclaimed debut CD "Making Light", Ms. Tatham has frequently appeared in top LA clubs like Catalina's, Vibrato, The Baked Potato and The Cinegrill; at the Annenberg Theater and as a regular guest with the Desert Cities Jazz Band in Palm Springs; and in New York she has appeared at The Town Hall, The Triad, The Duplex and will be making her debut at Feinstein's at Loew's Regency on Sunday, November 14. Equally at home in the worlds of Jazz and the Great American Songbook, Ms. Tatham has appeared in several of the prestigious Mabel Mercer Foundation Cabaret Conventions. Ms. Tatham is currently at work on a second album with legendary pianist/arranger/producer Clarence McDonald, whose work with the artists Bill Withers, Ray Charles, James Taylor, Hall & Oates and others has resulted in some of the most iconic recordings of our times. The Washington Post has hailed her "exceptionally beautiful voice...reminiscent of the pop balladeers of the late '50's and early '60's, but with a fine-drawn intensity and shimmering vibrato that are all her own"; while Penthouse Magazine has urged: "If you get a chance to see Joanne Tatham perform live, get moving! She's something you won't want to miss."

You can see Francesca Amari in "Secretly Square" at Tom Rolla's Gardenia on Thursday, November 4. "Secretly Square" is the show that Francesca premiered at The Metropolitan Room in New York, Directed by Barry Kleinbort with Musical Direction by Christopher Denny.

~A Message From The Vahanian Family~

Our 3-year old daughter, Isabella, was born with a diagnosis of Down’s Syndrome which brings it’s own ongoing associated special care needs especially during these formative years. She’s an amazing and most inspiring girl. She’s also been navigating a number of healing opportunities. At 5 months old, to repair some small holes in her heart, she had successful open-heart surgery at UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital.

Last August, shortly after her second birthday, she was diagnosed with leukemia. As part of her care, Wendy, my wife, and I lived with Isabella at the hospital on shifts 24/7 for almost 8 months while still caring for Gabriela, our 8 year old at home. We went into the hospital August 24th and completed in-hospital care in mid-April. Isabella’s care became our full time work.

Now that she’s completed her in-hospital chemotherapy treatment plan, we bring her in for blood work each month. Her most recent bone marrow tests show she’s in remission and we’re so grateful for her increasing health and to have us all sleeping under the same roof again.

I’m now taking steps to reengage my normal career as an actor.

As you might imagine, there are immediate and significant family cash flow needs to be met by our family and vulnerable as it may be for us to ask for assistance, we know how important it is to heed our heart’s guidance to do whatever we can in service to meeting our family’s needs.

We’re so grateful to Belle Zwerdling and Clifford Bell for organizing this fundraising event. We’re also so grateful to the artists contributing their gifts and to all who generously contribute financially and or through prayer.

For whatever way you may be called to be supportive please know your assistance is much appreciated!

If you’re unable to attend this event but would still like to make a contribution (which is non-tax deductible as we're not a 501c3 organization) we certainly welcome your support as well. Checks can be made out to Gregory Vahanian and sent to The Vahanian Family 11700 National Blvd. Suite LM #116, LA CA 90064.

However, this lines up for you, please include Isabella, Gabriela, Wendy and myself in your prayers as we successfully navigate this time of healing and reintegration into the normal flow of life.

Steady Blessings To You and Your Treasured Ones, Always,

Gregory, Wendy, Gabriela & Isabella

The Vahanian Family

THE KATEY SAGAL BAND returns to MBar in Hollywood for the first of two newly scheduled dates,  on Saturday, February 27 at 8 pm.  If you haven't been to one of her shows yet, don't miss the opportunity to hear the multi-talented Ms. Sagal perform in an intimate setting. "Katey Sagal is....a genuinely gifted singer...Her deep connection with the songs was clear....Her voice was powerful and effective...Sagal's four-piece band also added strong musical support and effective harmonies...." Elliot Zweibach, Cabaret Scenes. “Sagal knows how to entertain without seeming to try too hard, an art form in itself …. The breadth of Sagal's style as a songwriter is impressive. "Some Things are Better Left Unsaid" sounded like an Al Green soul-searcher. "Can't Hurry the Harvest" is a loping, infectiously hummable folk song. "September Rain" is a slow and passionate blues, a style that suits Sagal's smoky voice well.” Orange County Register.
To guarantee a seat, please pre-purchase tickets at www.plays411.net/kateysagal or via phone at 323.960.5563. Tickets can also be purchased at the door (cash only) if available.

***Please note: seating is on a first-come/first-served basis.  Doors open at 7:00 pm.  Unpaid reservations will be guaranteed only until 10 minutes prior to showtime.

A critically acclaimed singer and songwriter, Katey has released  two solo CDs, "Well" and "Room" .   Katey can be currently seen on the FX original series "Sons of Anarchy" and as the colorful Leela, a beautiful one-eyed alien, in the animated series "Futurama".
